Many people may have heard Ohtani's name in the news or on social media.

大谷おおたには、とても有名ゆうめいな野球選手やきゅうせんしゅです。

Ohtani is a very famous baseball player.

でも、大谷おおたにのすごさは、ただ野球やきゅうが上手うまいことだけではありません。

But what makes Ohtani amazing is not just that he is good at baseball.

大谷おおたには、長ながい間あいだ、多おおくの人ひとが難むずかしいと考かんがえていたことに挑戦ちょうせんしました。

Ohtani challenged something that many people had long thought was difficult.

野球やきゅうには、投手とうしゅと打者だしゃという大おおきな役割やくわりがあります。

In baseball, there are two major roles: pitcher and batter.

多おおくの選手せんしゅは、投手とうしゅか打者だしゃのどちらかを中心ちゅうしんにプレーします。

Most players mainly play as either a pitcher or a batter.

でも大谷おおたには、投なげることと打うつことの両方りょうほうで、高たかいレベルを目指めざしました。

But Ohtani aimed for a high level in both pitching and hitting.

He was born in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture.

岩手県いわてけんは、日本にっぽんの東北地方とうほくちほうにあります。

自然しぜんが多おおく、冬ふゆには雪ゆきが降ふることもある地域ちいきです。

It is an area with a lot of nature, and snow sometimes falls in winter.

大谷おおたには、その岩手いわてで育そだちました。

Ohtani grew up there in Iwate.

お父とうさんは、会社かいしゃの野球やきゅうチームで選手せんしゅをしていました。

His father played on a company baseball team.

そのため、大谷おおたににとって野球やきゅうは、小ちいさいころから身近みぢかなものでした。

Because of that, baseball was familiar to Ohtani from the time he was small.

大谷おおたには、野球やきゅうが大好だいすきな少年しょうねんでした。

Ohtani was a boy who loved baseball.

楽たのしむだけでなく、もっと速はやいボールを投なげたい、もっと遠とおくへ打うちたいという気持きもちも持もっていました。

He did not only enjoy it. He also wanted to throw faster pitches and hit the ball farther.

大谷おおたにはその後ご、岩手県いわてけんの花巻東高校はなまきひがしこうこうに進すすみました。

Later, Ohtani went on to Hanamaki Higashi High School in Iwate Prefecture.

花巻東高校はなまきひがしこうこうは、野球やきゅうが強つよいことで知しられている学校がっこうです。

Hanamaki Higashi High School is known as a school with a strong baseball program.

高校生こうこうせいになった大谷おおたには、体からだも大おおきくなり、投なげるボールも速はやくなりました。

After becoming a high school student, Ohtani's body grew bigger, and his pitches became faster.

高校時代こうこうじだいには、球速きゅうそくが160キロを超こえました。

During high school, his pitch speed went over 160 kilometers per hour.

高校生こうこうせいで160キロを超こえるボールを投なげるのは、とても珍めずらしいことです。

For a high school student to throw a pitch over 160 kilometers per hour is very rare.

多おおくの人ひとが、大谷おおたにに大おおきな可能性かのうせいを感かんじました。

高校生こうこうせいのころから、目標もくひょうをはっきり持もっていました。

Ohtani wrote his goals on paper and thought carefully about what he needed to do to reach them.

大谷おおたにの強つよさは、高校時代こうこうじだいから少すこしずつ作つくられていました。

Ohtani's strength was built little by little from his high school days.

高校こうこうを卒業そつぎょうしたあと、大谷おおたには北海道日本ほっかいどうにっぽんハムファイターズに入はいりました。

After graduating from high school, Ohtani joined the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.

ここから、二刀流にとうりゅうへの本格的ほんかくてきな挑戦ちょうせんが始はじまります。

From here, his serious challenge as a two-way player began.

その中なかで大谷おおたには、二刀流にとうりゅうに挑戦ちょうせんしました。

投手とうしゅには投手とうしゅの練習れんしゅうがあり、打者だしゃには打者だしゃの練習れんしゅうがあります。

2024年ねん、大谷おおたにはひじの手術しゅじゅつから回復かいふくする途中とちゅうだったため、投手とうしゅとしては出場しゅつじょうしませんでした。

In 2024, Ohtani was still recovering from elbow surgery, so he did not appear as a pitcher.
